GDG- Water Park proposed for Gettysburg

Jay, and Andy,

Ok if education is the answer, how do we help the facilitation of education
process?

There are several groups who come to mind right off the bat.
NPS
Gettysburg Foundation (And Friends)
GMPA

There are at least 3 websites that I know about or more.

My thinking, understanding, whatever is there is no sense of urgency about
this.. Look I also understand that we are all time strapped. We all have
lives. But I wonder if there is a way to bring this all together, so its
concentrated.

One more thing. Gettysburg is just ONE of the historical sites that is
facing incredible pressure. As noted below, I live in New Jersey. Outside of
3 major area of historical impact there is only spots of historical sites
left. Where I live in NJ I am in the MIDDLE of our First Revolution. The
War for Independence. I can in a 20 minute walk from my house, to at least 4
sites that have been either obliterated or are marked by only a story board
or two.

My fear is that Gettysburg along with several of the other sites will become
just like here in NJ. And if we don't make a concentrated effort to save
Gettysburg, all we are going to have is the wonderful park surrounded by
McMansions, Water Parks and Casinos.
And that scares the h*ll out of me, to the point I am almost sick.

I look forward to your thoughts.

Jim,

I think you are right when you say "Maybe the answer is well education
???". I don't think the average person who visits Gettysburg truly has an
idea of the extent of sacrifice that took place on the ground they walk on
when visiting Gettysburg. I was guilty of this myself. However, the more I
studied the battle and its aftermath the more I understood that Gettysburg
wasn't just about monuments and ghost tours, but it's about the hardships
and sacrifices that both armies had to endure along with the people of
Gettysburg and ultimately the survival of the United States. I some times
wonder if people actually consider the ground they are walking on as
hallowed or just a really cool place to visit?

Of course there is the capitalism part that motivates people also! However,
if people like the ones that post on this message board can educate the
masses about Gettysburg and rally support against such things as water parks
and Casinos, then maybe we can help preserver the hallowed ground that is
Gettysburg.

Jay

Andy,

I agree that's it probably the ANSWER to it. But..

How can we ignore, or THEY in this case the developers ignore the fact that
its hallowed ground.. Man this isn't a FUN area.. It's an area of
Remembrance, of sacrifice, of loyalty, of courage, of honor, of dedication
to duty, God and Country.........

Maybe the answer is well education ???

That's an over simplification I realize. But I don't have any other answers
then that..

With 2 million visitors a year, I don't think it ever is going to stop until
people stop coming to visit the battlefield. People see 2 million visitors
and instantly see $$$$$.

Thanks
Andy

Dear Tom,

Ok a deep breath here.. I realize I am "preaching to the choir" but man
when, where or if ever is this going to stop?

I don't understand this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am trying, TRYING to understand the thought process about this..

Look I know the area needs jobs. Ok that's a given... But where does the
encroachment on this historic place, this hallowed ground stop?

This is getting really scary. Especially after being down there three weeks
ago and walking the Herr Ridge road and Longstreets Countermarch.

McMansions popping up like d*mn mushrooms!!

Sighhhhhhhhh

Ok deep breath again. Would some one PLEASE help me out understanding this
???

The front page of today's Harrrisburg newspaper has an article on proposed
200-acre indoor water park that would be larger than Hersheypark.
