Greetings:

Why hasn't the Foundation or CWPT started raising funds to purchase the 11th Corp Hospital at Gettysburg? A bargain at 2.2 million.

Tom--

You may have done this already and left it off your list, but what about
Second Manassas? It is a battle with a lot of interesting aspects -
Confederates throwing rocks (supposedly), Longstreet's artillery, a
night action, the initial baptism by fire of the Iron Brigade, The
Fitz-John Porter dispute, Jackson's raid on the railroad depot, etc. You
could combine it with First Manassas if you like or likely Balls Bluff
or some of the other destinations discussed.

There is an "off the beaten path" trail around the conflict between the
Iron Brigade etc. and Ewell's troops called the Brawner Farm loop. It's
a best kept secret down here. It's a simple woods/meadow walk, but
people like it because it is marked and because it usually isn't
crowded. It's also possible to walk down the unfinished railroad for
some distance and read the marker's there.

Regrettably, I don't know any good guides, but the Visitor Center could
help you.

Oh, regarding Margaret's suggestion, I hope to go to the Correspondent's
Arch some day soon. There is an impressive photograph on the back of my
second-hand copy of G.A. Townsend's Katy of Catoctin.

David

Greetings:

Balls Bluff is just outside of Leesburg basically in a residential
community. It is off the beaten path and you could easily spend 2 or 3
hours walking through the woods. I'd also suggest that Manassas is only 2
1/2 to 3 hours away as well. Its a really nice driveas well.

Lets hope for good weather this weekend in GB.

Yes, Monacacy dead are there. There is a special stone for the unknowns
from that battle also. Some of the stones did say Antietam & South
Mountain on them. I took some nice photos. And of course Francis Scott
Key & Barbara Fritchie are buried there. Did you know that Sculptor
James Kelly (Generals In Bronze) did the bas relief for Fritchie's
gravestone?

They re-did all of the Confederate stones at Mt. Olivet. I took some
photos of them. I pop over to MD now & then. I was surprised to learn
that there are Antietam dead in the Gettysburg National Cemetery also,
although GNC was established well after the Battle of Antietam.

"How about Petersburg/Appomattox?"

Thanks for the suggestion, Fred, which is a good one. Unfortunately it is a
little too far away -- over four hours by bus. Since it is a day trip and
in order to have enough time to tour the battlefield, we need to go to
something closer.

<<Did your Antietam trip include Monocacy?>>

Jeff, I did not go on that trip with the R/T and cannot remember whether
Monocacy was included. I am checking with our trip coordinator to find out.
Is there enough at Monocacy to spend the entire day touring (6 hours or so)?
If not, we could also go into Frederick to the Medical Museum.

I was just thinking distance. I haven't made it to Frederick, Monocacy or
Antietam yet since I moved up here.

What about Ball's Bluff in Leesburg, Virginia? Yahoo maps show that the
trip would be about 2 1/2 hours for you. I know a guide who does a 3 hour
tour of the battlefield and there's enough other sites nearby to fill up the
rest of the time.

Hi, Tom,
would the CSA retreat be a tour to consider, or Gettysburg Day 3 in the
morning and the CSA retreat to Williamsport and Falling Waters in the
afternoon? Combining the two may be too ambitious, now that I think of it.
Perhaps you can drive to Gettysburg and immediately out to Fairfield, Jack's
Mountain, and then on through Finksburg and Hagerstown to the fords across
the Potomac. The Gettysburg Foundation (formerly Friends of the National
Park at Gettysburg) ran a tour of this type, and the guides were LBGs Dr.
Charlie Fennell and Mike Vallone, both of whom were excellent.
Just a thought.

Thanks, Teej. That is a great idea. What else is nearby? Is there a CW
tour of Leesburg available, do you know?

I will add this to the list for our upcoming board meeting to discuss.

You're welcome, Tom. The guide I had in mind is Jim Morgan, author of "A
Little Short of Boats: The Fights at Ball's Bluff and Edwards Ferry, October
21-22, 1861. A fantastic book I might add. I'll send you his email address
by private email and he can answer all of your questions.

Park at Gettysburg) ran a tour of this type, and the guides were LBGs Dr.
Charlie Fennell and Mike Vallone, both of whom were excellent.>>

JC,

I like the idea of a Day 3 plus retreat to Jack's Mountain. The trip all
the way to Williamport/Falling Waters will likely be too much "on the bus"
time for the group, since we will be traveling three hours up to Gettysburg
and back.

I have taken the Fairfield/JM tour, and I think the R/T members would find
it to their liking. Thanks for your ideas.

Regards, Tom

I just recently gave a two-day tour of the Maryland Campaign of 1862,
from Leesburg through South Mountain - not including Harper's Ferry or
Antietam. There is a ton to see:

Harrison Hall
White's Ford
Poolesville
Sugarloaf Mountain
Urbana House
Mt. Olivet Cemetery
Monocacy Aquaduct
Dr. Burt Road
Benjamin Mell grave site
Jefferson Pass
Elmwood Cemetery
Sandy Hook
South Mountain
...etc.

Jim L., Jim C., Jack, Marge and Stephen,

Appreciate your recommendations. I am adding them to my list for the
upcoming board meeting.

Jim Cameron, could you elaborate briefly on the flag preservation facility
in Harrisburg. That might be a good possibility in conjunction with the
National Civil War Museum for a one-day trip. Are there other worthwhile
CW-related things to do or see in Harrisburg (in order to consider options)?

Stephen Recker, that sounds like a great tour. What would you recommend
among that list as a good one-day package?

Thanks for everyone's help. The ideas provided so far will give our group
some good options to choose from.

Tom

Thanks to a phone call by Dick Crafton, the flags will be shown, but for one

The facility is just a few blocks from the State Capital building, which
would also be worth a visit and tour. I don't have the exact address, but
it's in the most non-descript commercial building you've ever seen. Nothing
to suggest what's inside.

The facility is where all the PA CW battleflags are preserved (not restored,
all that's left of some are fragments or just the fringe) and stored. Just
seeing the processes by which these very delicate flags, most of which were
improperly stored for decades, are unfurled and stabilized is an education
in itself.

Also at the facility are the flag staffs, stored in their on specially
constructed racks. To me, these were every bit as evocative as the flags
themselves, with their bullet scars and field repairs.

Karl,

Both the citation and the pictures are very moving, the one of the
presentation of the flag to your mother especially so. Thanks for sharing.

I am obtaining a Signal Corps kit (flags, torches, telegraph key).
Does anyone know of a Signal Corps reenactor in the southwest PA,
southwest OH, northern panhandle of WV, eastern MD or Adams County, PA who
would help with instruction?

Contact me off-line reaandrewredd at yahoo.com

Teej/Tom Ryan,

I was going to mention Ball's Bluff. I know what guide Teej is talking
about and although a chance I had to tour with him fell through last year,
I'm really hoping to make it down there sometime to see it... He also has a
very good book on the topic.

What about Ball's Bluff in Leesburg, Virginia? Yahoo maps show that the
trip would be about 2 1/2 hours for you. I know a guide who does a 3 hour
tour of the battlefield and there's enough other sites nearby to fill up the

rest of the time.

Teej
