Greetings Members:
Does anyone know where I could find information about soldiers treated at the 11th corp hospital at gettysburg? I'm trying to find out the extent of my GG Grandfather, Edward Unangst's wounds on Day one of the battle.
I understand the property is for sale at 2.2 million...I hope CWPT or the Foundation will preserve the land.
Thanks,
Todd Heller

I left Gettysburg yesterday morning and attended a small Memorial Day service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, MD. Few know that there is a very long row of Confederate dead along the fenceline at that cemetery. Most were the dead from South Mountain and Antietam. I still recall my Dad calling Memorial Day "Decoration Day." We went to a number of cemeteries & placed flowers and flags on the graves at both National and private cemeteries.
Blessings to all,
Bernadette

Bernadette:
Mt. Oliver is a beautiful cemetery where Francis Scott Key is buried, as well as Barbara Frichey and Thomas Johnson. If I am not mistaken: I believe the Confederate row (http://www.mothernaturesbeauty.net/Photos/Photos/Misc-179.jpg) you reference though are from the the Battle of Monocacy. There is a monument at the end of the row. I think the dead from South Mountain and Antietam are in Rose Hill Cemetary in Hagerstown, MD if I am not mistaken.
Thanks
Andy

Hello,'
One of the hats that I wear out here in Tennessee is president of the
Friends of the Ft. Donelson Campaign. This past Sunday night we held a memorial at
the National Cemetery using over 1700 luminaries to light each headstone.
Included in the cemetery are over 650 Union soldiers, mostly killed in the Ft.
Donelson Campaign and others in the area from bullets and disease. Once
they were all up and burning it was a true sight to behold. If anyone on this
list is interested in some pictures please email me privately and I will be
happy to send them along.
Of special interest is the first circle of 62 graves (numbered 1-62) that
are men from the 11th Illinois Infantry, all of whom were killed in action
during the Confederate breakout attack of Feb. 15th while stubbornly defending
the crossroads of Wynn's Ferry Road, the road to Bufford Hollow and Forge Lane.
After holding for some time, the 11th Illinois was struck on two different
sides by a coordinated Confederate attack involving the 2nd Kentucky Infantry
(Buckner's elite unit) and Forrest's 3rd Tennessee Cavalry. The 11th
finally crumbled and broke to the rear - and this is where those 62 men died. The
11th Illinois suffered 50 per cent casualties at Donelson and then went on to
suffer 60 per cent at Shiloh!
We also had 250 luminaries lined up on the outer wall honoring the 250
Confederates killed in the battle, many of whom were from the same county where
Ft. Donelson is today.
I honored my two known military ancestors - LTC James Biggs (WW2), my dad,
and Thomas L. Keeling, 22nd Virginia Infantry, CSA.
I am very fortunate to live in a city filled with the heroes of the 101st
Airborne (Air Assault) Division, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment
(Night Stalkers) and the 5th Special Forces Group. I also thank the
veterans of this list for their service.
Hoo-ah from Clarksville!

PA CAPITOL PRESERVATION COMMITTEE SHOWCASES STATE CIVIL WAR FLAGS WITH OPEN HOUSE EVENT
HARRISBURG, PA- In honor of the memory of our nation's fallen soldiers and the proud heritage of our country's flag, The Pennsylvania Capitol Preservation Committee will host an open house to showcase the State's collection of Civil War flags in conjunction with Flag Day beginning on June 12 and running through June 14, 2006. The open house will be held at the Committee's flag conservation and storage facility, located at 10th and Market Streets in Harrisburg. Free guided tours and a souvenir poster will be offered between 9 am and 3 pm for Civil War enthusiasts and the general public alike. For more information call 717-783-6484.
When the Capitol Preservation Committee was created in 1982, one of its first endeavors was addressing the need to preserve Pennsylvania's collection of 377 Civil War and 22 Spanish-American War battle flags. These flags had been on display in the Capitol's main rotunda since 1914. Concern over their deteriorating condition prompted the establishment of the Civil War "Save the Flags" project.
The work included not only physical treatment, but also documentation of the flags and research into their historical significance. Raising private funds encouraged public participation in supporting this important collection. With the success of the flag preservation project, other states have followed Pennsylvania's lead and begun similar programs to conserve their flag collections.
Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Clymer said, "The Committee's conservation facility is just a few blocks from the Capitol and serves as a unique resources for the public by providing supervised access to the flags. These historic state treasures are stored in a stable temperature and humidity-controlled environment, while accommodating visitors who would like to see the public collection. The Capitol Preservation Committee is honored to be the custodian of this important historic collection and to be able to share them with the public."

In today's NY Newsday I read of 2,998 re-discovered Civil War gravesites. It isn't "pure" Gettysburg news but I believe all GDG Esteemed Members will enjoy reading the article.

New gravestones for Civil War vets
--------------------
The Associated press
May 29, 2007
Nearly 1,200 gravestones recently acquired by a Brooklyn cemetery were not made for the recently deceased, but for the long forgotten.
The new markers are for some of the more than 3,000 Civil War veterans buried at Green-Wood Cemetery who were recently rediscovered by volunteers after a nearly five-year search.
During a special tribute to the veterans on Memorial Day, attendees viewed the new markers, laid out on their backs in precise rows before they are placed permanently.
Volunteers scoured the grounds, records, government databases, archives and death notices to uncover the names and histories of the veterans buried at the cemetery, but whose headstones had sunk into the ground or were obliterated by time and the elements. They originally expected to find 200 veterans, but instead found 2,998.
"This is a work of historical rescue," said one of the volunteers, Jeffrey Blustein, a medical ethicist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, in Monday's edition of The New York Times. "History isn't just about the rich and famous, it's about all the forgotten people, ordinary people who otherwise would never be known."
Nearly 600,000 people are buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, which was founded in 1838, including artist Jean Michel-Basquiat, composer Leonard Bernstein and Laura Keene, the actress who was on stage when Abraham Lincoln was shot.
It is also where many veterans from every American war are buried, said Richard J. Moylan, the cemetery's president. He said the search to rediscover the Civil War veterans was the first step of a larger effort.
"This is just the beginning of a process of reconnecting with the history of our cemetery - and the history of our country," Moylan said.

Hello,
I just came back from walking the route of the Hood Assault. The good news, I did not see one tick. The grass and weeds are not high because of the drought we are having, but there are some thistles and briars to walk through. Did not see any poison ivy that we will be walking through. I did the hike in about 80 minutes but it will take at least twice as long as we will be stopping to talk and a group does not move that fast. I do suggest that everyone wear long pants and good hiking shoes. Ed will be in his glory as we have three streams to cross and rock fences to climb over. I worked out an alternate route at several areas for those who do not wish to walk through the fields. The rocks up through the slaughter pen and Valley of Death are still visible from the cutting, but I was surprised at how much brush is growing up already. I am sure brush was there at time of battle so it is now more authentic.
I am amazed every time I walk through this area at what you can now see. Take time to look behind you from time to time to get a view that not many people see.
I do suggest that you work out a car pool between Devils Den and where we start at South Confederate Avenue so at least the driver can be taken back to get a car. It is a long walk back. We will need to start at 11:00 sharp to get the tour done in time for everyone to get lunch before the 3:00 tour starts.

Dean Shultz

They obviously arrived at that price ($2,474.73) scientifically! If this
keeps up, we may have to keep our copies in a safety deposit box.

I think this same copy of the book has been listed by that seller at this

I cvarry mine stuffed in a backack all the time. I bought it to use on the
field, not as an investment. Autograph or no autograph, it is simply a tool.

Our CW Round Table will be taking its annual trip to a CW site or
battlefield in October. I am looking for ideas of where to go with no more
than a 3 to 3 1/2 hour bus ride from Dover, DE. We have already gone to the
most popular sites in past years, such as Gettysburg, Antietam,
Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and Brandy Station/Culpeper. Last year we
went to Sheperdstown/Harper's Ferry.
We normally do an all-day trip leaving at 6 a.m. arriving about 9. Tour for
about three hours in the morning and another three hours after lunch.
Appreciate any recommendations you may have for an interesting CW tour in
the PA, MD, WV, VA areas, and a good tour guide for that site.
We have not ruled out going back to Gettysburg for a specialty tour of some
kind, such as visiting the cavalry battle sites. So any ideas you have
along these lines, and the name of an LBG or other tour guide to lead it
would be welcome.

Speaking of Taps
I just thought this might be a nice time to share this with the group here.
I have enjoyed the last two musters and am looking forward to seeing the
group again this weekend.
Last October my Dad passed away and was burried at Arlington in late
November with Full Military honors. As a Navy Cross recipient, wounded three
times he deserved it.
I read this post about Taps and got a little choked up.......again.
I made sure that I photographed the Ceremony because when we got out of the
cars and walked up to the Cassion I was floored by what was waiting for us.
Anyway, fell free to take a look at the pic's.
When you click on the link, go to the bottom and click back as they are in
reverse sequence.
See ya all this weekend.
Oh....here is the link to my Dad's Navy Cross Citation. Scroll down to

esteemed authors.
I'm coming with cash.
Have you're books in the trunk of your car.
Bring your favorite autographing pen.
The Dedication should include words like: Valued Friend....Discerning Dilettante...Keen Student...selfless proponent and champion...and maybe a comment or two on what a damn good looking man I am.
the rest, of course, I'll leave to you.
