And, for a Gettysburg link, Fort Garland was named after General John Garland, who was the father-in-law of General Longstreet. He also was the uncle of Confederate General Samuel Garland, Jr. who was KIA at South Mountain. At the time that Fort Garland was built in 1858, Garland was a Brevet Brigadier General and commander of the Department of New Mexico, in which the fort was located. Unlike his relatives, Gen. Garland did not go with the Confederacy but he died in early 1861.
Regards,
Margaret
