Night attacks in the Civil War were rare and had a very poor track record. One of the most famous, the Confederate attack on a Union division under John W. Geary at Wauhatchie (Brown's Ferry, TN) under Longstreet and Bragg on the night of October 28-29, 1863, ended with a Union victory after Hooker sent two divisions to Geary's relief at Wauhatchie Station and the final establishment of the Cracker Line that brought food, ammunition, and reinforcements to Union troops beseiged at Chattanooga and the eventual end of the siege.
