Avery was 33 years old when he died at the Culp farm, 30 hours after being
mortal wounded in the neck. His slave Elijah refused to allow his body to
be buried but placed it in a quartermasters wagon with the plan of taking it
back to North Carolina for burial. By the time they wagon train of misery
reach Williamsport, Elijah realized the body would not stand the long trip
and he buried Avery. The remains were later exhumed and reinterred in the
Confederate section of Rose Hall Cemetery in Hagerstown.
