In his memoirs, Judson Clark, commanding 1st NJ, Batt B, recalled seeing Gen
Birney in conversation with an unidentified general officer somewhere beyond
the Stony Hill the evening of July 1st. His battery had out distanced Ward's
brigade and in time pulled to the right near the crest of the Peach Orchard.
Having arrived near 7:00 p. m he described seeing Calef's battery in "Action
Front," un-engaged, north of the crossroad, with supporting cavalry everywhere,
and lots enemy campfires to the north-northwest. His unit was parked for "quite
some time" before the forward elements of Ward's infantry closed. He then led
said column to the crossroad whereas he was directed east. Clark vividly
recalled leading Ward's brigade over the [Stony] hill before dropping into the
Wheatfield describing woods to his left. He then recalled crossing Plum Run
before turning north at the base of a ridge. He also recalled seeing a section of
guns on the crest (Lt. John Egan's section, 5th U.S. Batt K - Kinzie *Not be
confused with Lt. John Egan of 1st U.S. Batt I.) near the large hill that in
time would be referred to as LRT.
Problem we have is ... Clark does not mention where this particular incident
occurred other then after passing over the [Stony] hill shortly after turning
east. It could have taken place anywhere between Stony Hill and South Cemetery
Ridge. He used "unidentified general officer" which leaves me to believe it
was not Ward and or Sickles.
What other general officer other then Buford or Geary could it have been?
Hancock perhaps? For some reason Rollins thought it Geary but never elaborated?
I have no clue but would love to include a name to Clark's mystery general.
Any suggestions? Any evidence?
Thank you in advance,
Dave S.
