GDG- Black Officers in The Civil War

The US colored troops were raised with white officers only. However,
there were two exceptions - the 1st and 2nd Lousiana Native Guards
were New Orleans' Creole units that were completely staffed with
French speaking black New Orleans Creoles. Some were killed at Port
Hudson, and then they were all replaced by Gen Nathanial Banks who
took over NO from Butler and didn't want black officers. The second
exception is that at the end of the war a very few USCT
non-commissioned officers attained the rank of Lt., such as a couple
in the 54th MA. Black surgeons and chaplins also held officer rank.
There were certainly no black generals in the ACW.
