I believe that I've seen rare documentary footage (shot at the actual battle!) that showed that even the Union troops involved were quite confused about what to call it, going as far as to scream 'Fredericksburg!, Fredericksburg! when they all knew damn well they were in Pennsylvania! :-)

If I remember correctly, Pickett and John Mosby went to visit Lee at his Richmond home just after the war ended, and the meeting was a bit 'stiff' to say the least.  On the way out Pickett grumbled, "That old may destroyed my Division."  To which Mosby replied, "Yes, but he made you immortal."
