<< I was doing some research on the 73rd Ohio. The unit historian makes
reference to the fact that on 3 July the sharpshooters in town were such a
problem that"...the general sent down a six-pounder gun to the Taneytown
road and shelled the houses where they were hidden..." I have to assume he
meant a 12-pounder but has anyone seen reference made to artillery being
moved specifically to shell the town because of sharpshooters? >>
I don't have any specific quotes ready to hand, but yes, I have seen
accounts of artillery being used to surpress sharpshooters in the town. I'm
not sure I'd say the town was being shelled, though. It was more likely to
be cases of the artillery being used to fire a shot or two at specific,
particularly troublesome sharpshooter positions that Union skirmishers or
sharpshooters were having difficulty dealing with.
