GDG- Ewell and the High Ground

To add one more thing to the previous, what is especially telling about the
importance of Stuart and his cavalry to the ANV is a review of the
correspondence in the OR (messages and reports) from the beginning of the
war up to and including the Gettysburg Campaign that lays out clearly the
methodology that Stuart developed and practiced in carrying out his duties
as cavalry commander, including his intelligence and counterintelligence or
security roles as well as his combat capability.

The sustained experience that Stuart enjoyed dating back to the beginning of
the war and previously as a cavalry commander was not matched by anyone on
the Union side if for no other reason that the Union, at least in the East,
did not have an independent cavalry command until early 1863. As a result,
Union cavalry leaders and their commands had a lot of catching up to do to
reach the level that Stuart and his cavalry had already achieved.

intended to help explain why things turned out the way they did rather than
an emphasis on what ifs. At the same time, based on Stuart's performance
throughout his career I do not see the problem with hazarding an assessment
of how things could have turned out differently. There are pretty good
grounds for making that judgment. Not to mention there are several books
that have been written on this subject.

Tom,

Understood. I think JD came a lot closer to the point I was trying to make
than I did. This was about my 5th attempt and I finally just sent it
because, well, work has to be done!
