GDG- Ewell and the High Ground

bob,

No problem. Having read so many books and articles on this subject,
including Eric and J.D.'s "Plenty of Blame," it seems to me that it is
worthwhile airing some of the issues to get the latest refinements out for
discussion. Having done extensive research on Stuart recently, including
his pre-war career in the old army, my appreciation for his ability has
sharpened considerably. While avoiding the promotion of one individual over
another or one side over the other and attempting to evaluate situations on
their merits, I more and more conclude that Stuart was the X factor with
regard to the Battle of Gettysburg. And, as mentioned previously, his
performance during the retreat tends to strengthen that opinion.

intended to help explain why things turned out the way they did rather than
an emphasis on what ifs. At the same time, based on Stuart's performance
throughout his career I do not see the problem with hazarding an assessment
of how things could have turned out differently. There are pretty good
grounds for making that judgment. Not to mention there are several books
that have been written on this subject.

Tom,

Understood. I think JD came a lot closer to the point I was trying to make
than I did. This was about my 5th attempt and I finally just sent it
because, well, work has to be done!
