I will second Tim's suggestion about visiting the NSS-A's shoots. I have been along with Margaret and it is quite impressive and can give you as near an experience as what those soldiers faced as anything. Though the good graces of a NSS-A member, on private land, we also got an opportunity to shoot live fire with a carbine and rifle (my memory fails me on what model, but perhaps Margaret might remember). I have never shot live fire before that or since, but I wanted to know the weight of the gun and what the soldiers' experienced shooting it. It was an awesome experience, one that years later I have not forgotten. It truly gave me an even greater respect for any soldier of any time period.
