Andy...
Your question on Flanks
Flank Markers....
These are a few of the unique ones...
147st PA has a star on Geary Ave,
6th PA Cav has octagonal ones,
2nd NH has two different types,
99th PA square with slanted top, lettering on slant
124th NY kind of a square post with corps symbol on side with
regiment number
4th Ohio made out of a cast white zinc, square and have a unique design
New Hampshire Sharpshooters (Hancock Ave) rectangular with curved top
and lettering on top
69th PA (Hancock Ave) square post, slanted top with company letter on
top, linked by chain
38th PA shaped like the main monument, lettering on wide side (base
of LRT-Warren Ave)
83rd PA square post with sculptured top, lettering on side (base of
LRT-Warren Ave)
90th PA shaped like tree stumps to match main monument
5th NH rectangular, lettering on top and side, also one is a large
square post with point on top that serves as the regimental and
brigade flank marker
Each State usually had its own design... but there are some
exceptions...
Pennsylvania - square with a point on the top, lettering on side, -
some are square, no point on top, lettering on side, - some are
square, no point on top, lettering on top
New york - square, rough on sides, with a smooth top and lettering on
top, - a few are square with lettering on side (123 NY)
Mass - kind of looks like a tombstone, lettering on wide side
Ohio - some are square, corps symbol on top, lettering on side, -
some are rectangular and have a slanted front with lettering, - some
look like tombstone with lettering on wide side
Maryland - square, rough sides, smooth on top, lettering on top
Maine - rectangular, slanted top, lettering on top
Wisc - square, corps emblem on top, lettering on side, - square,
lettering on top
Mich - square, pointed top, lettering on side
New Jersey - square, point on top, lettering on side, - square, rough
sides, lettering on top
Indiana - square, lettering on side
Conn - square post, slanted top, lettering on side
New York, Mass, Maine have tried to keep most of their flanks looking
the same...
Not all monuments have flank markers and not all states have flank
markers...
Some monuments have one flank marker and than use the monument as the
other flank marker (68PA - Peach Orchard area, 14CT - Hancock Ave)
This was a quickie and I may have missed some designs... I have
photos of all the ones I can find... there appears to be about 15
missing...
