Alan,

As I just posted, several companies of cavalry did remain on the field.  Pleasonton either forgot, chose not to, or did not realize the importance of replacing Buford.  When Meade reamed out Pleasonton (twice) for not replacing Buford, Alf made a weak request to have David Gregg send a regiment to the field.  It was late that night before they could arrive.  In other words, Alf decided a regiment was to perform the work two brigades had done previously.
