On the way to Gettysburg Pat and spent a few days in DC. I have been there
perhaps a dozen times but this one was notable for several reasons.
A lot of stuff is closed. The national Museum of Art has the 20th Maine
relief closed to the public, the Part of the Smithsonian Castle that had the
Locomotive is closed , Fords theatre is closed as is the Museum of American
history,
They have taken a sample of the American History museum artifacts and put
them in the Air and Space Museum. In fact most of the items I go to see at
the American history museum were there-Ruby Slippers, Archie's Chair, first
computer and more. Unfortunately the descriptions still contain the little
asides they are famous for(the First typewriter carries a note about
discrimination against women and even Kermit the Frog is has a note about
"tolerance"
Security is very, very tight. I knew I could no longer walk in the capitol
or stand inline to get up the Washington Monument but was surprised that I
had to wait in a long line , go through a metal detector and have my
backpack searched to get to the food court at the old post office. At the
National art Museum they not only search your backpack but make you check it
in to be picked up when you leave!
