Subject: GDG- Butterfield's wounding

Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:

Since there's been lots of discussion about this particular Ol' Dan lately,
I recalled a passage in Bill Styple's "Generals in Bronze" about his
wounding on July 2. Kelly interviewed Gen. Alexander Webb, and this is what
Webb had to say:

"[Butterfield is a] lying little knave. He is one of the most corrupt,
scheming, lying scoundrels... He pretends he was wounded at Gettysburg. And
Sickles and I who were writing the Official history for the State cross off
his claim. He was hit in the throat with a branch of a tree. He tied a
handkerchief around it with the bloody side out. Gen. Meade showed him up."
[Page 148-49.]

So did anyone see Butterfield hit with a piece of shell? :-)

Also found this from the GK Warren interview:

"That night [June 27] I was waked up about three in the morning by General
Meade, who said, "Get up! I'm in command of the Army of the Potomac. I
want you to be my Chief of Staff." I told him I thought he had better
retain Butterfield."

Guys,

All I can add about Butterfield is that I have lived in apartments smaller
than his grave site at West Point. :)

Hope all are well.
