Hello,

While I enjoyed Stewart's book on the famous assault he was wrong about the
Virginia state flags being used by the regiments of Pickett's Division.
While Virginia and North Carolina were the only two Confederate states to attempt
to make a full unit issue of their state flags, and while most certainly the
VA units in the GB campaign either had them with them or they had been sent
home for safety, none have been documented as being used in the battle.

The late Richard Rollins' fine book "The Damned Red Flag Of The Rebellion"
documents each Confederate flag that was taken during the campaign (although at
least two more have turned up since) and none of them were Virginia state
flags. Considering that Pickett's Division lost the vast majority of their
flags in the assault and all were Richmond Depot-made ANV battle flags of the
Second or Third Bunting issue, this evidence (or lack thereof I guess) proves
Stewart wrong.

A simple trip down to the Museum of the Confederacy when he was doing the
book would have saved him this error.
