Todd,

Becoming a guide is a multi part process. The first step is passing the
written exam which is given every 2-5 years depending on the need for guides.
The exam was given last December so logically the earliest it will be given
again would be in December 2008. Usually 150-200 people are accepted to
take the written exam and of those only the top 10-20 scores move on. Many
people study for years to take the written exam and most do not make the cut on
the first attempt as the top 10-20 scores are usually well above a graded score
of 90%.

Once you pass the written exam, there is a training seminar to attend and
then there is an oral exam to pass. The oral exam consists of giving a two hour
tour to a park ranger and an existing guide. Nobody passes the oral on the
first attempt, but you are given a second shot. In my class a few years ago
now about 70% of us passed the oral exam on the second shot.

Hope this helps

Andy Ward
