<<One other instance of less than stellar performance was when
Butterfield
prematurely issued orders for a number of the AoP corps to begin to
pursue
Lee's army after the Battle of Gettysburg. Meade had instructed him not
to
do so without first getting the specific o.k, from Meade. This blunder

to Butterfield's ultimate dismissal from the AoP.>>

Tom,

Could you please provide a specific source for your above statement?

According to CPT Meade in "Life and Letters" Butterfield, who had been
wounded on 3 July, was relieved on 5 July as CoS and replaced by
Pleasonton/Warren.

Up to that point, the only movement of the AoP after the ANV was a recon
led by Warren and Sedgwick with the 6th Corps.
Meade placed the 1st and 3rd Corps under Sedgwick's command. A message
from Newton to S. Williams (0300, 6 July) stated that his messenger from
Sedgwick stated that Sedgwick had directed the 1st & 3rd Corps to move
to Emmitsburg.
Meade approved the move, directing the 1st & 3rd Corps to comply (OR,
Vol III, pp 556) at 0430/0440, then, after that, Meade received
information that Sedgwick had not directed the movement and Meade
countermanded it (OR, Vol III, pp 557 based on the Sedgwick message to0
Meade on page 555). It appears that the confusion was a result of
Newton's message to S. Williams, referenced above.

I find no implication that Butterfield had any role in this. His last
messages as CoS were administrative and involved no directing of troop
movements. The last message under his signature as CoS that I see is a
circular regarding the return of artillery to the Artillery Reserve
dated 5 July.

Thanks,
VR, Rick Schaus
