Hi,
Might I suggest reading Tillie Pierce's book? She was a young girl at the time of the battle and your niece might be able to relate to Tillie's experience. I know it doesn't cover the era, but a taste keeps one going.

To all who have so graciously helped,

Thank you so much for all your kind suggestions. I am having
 McPherson's
Battle Cry of Freedom, the Oxford Illustrated edition sent to her home
 as a
surprise. We will also visit her local library the next time we have
 her
with us. She has much to learn. Now if I could get her want to learn
 this
for the right reasons. Alas, she wants to be able to converse
 intelligently
with the young soldiers that she met on Saturday!

Again, thanks to you all. Now back to my devoted lurker status,

Terry Egley
