Take a look at rolled Whitworth rifle rounds - they are much bigger than  
typical Springfield/Enfield rounds and the bullet is also bigger - which may  
well explain the extra powder needed.
 
I have read that the only thing louder on a Civil War battlefield than a  
Whitworth rifle going off is a cannon.
