Received /my/ copy of the book yesterday - it does indeed look fabulous.
The first thing I looked into were the maps corresponding to the Peach
Orchard action, and then looked at the Wheatfield ones, and noticed
something that looked strange to me -
I was under the impression that Caldwell took his division into the
Wheatfield from the northeast of that area (forming in Trostle's woods)
- yet on page 169 (map 17.3) it shows his division coming from the
/west/ via the Wheatfield road (looking like the division came down the
Emmitsburg Road and took a left onto the Wheatfield road).
Has anybody any thoughts on this?
I don't think Gottfried is depicting Caldwell as having come along the
Emmitsburg Road. In his accompanying text on page 168, Gottfried states that
Caldwell's division had marched rapidly from its earlier position on Cemetery
Ridge. so apparently his march (not shown) was across the fields from the
northeast. But it does look to me that the map in question depicts Caldwell's
division as being deployed at least a few hundred yards too far west along the
Wheatfield Road. I think it would be better shown with Caldwell's western
flank instead being at about the point where Map 17.3 shows the eastern flank.
(I checked Imhof's maps of Caldwell's approach and such a change would be
consistent with what Imhof shows.)
