I am pleased with my first quick browse.
And I am even more pleased after my second and third browses. The maps,
particularly those of the battle itself, are clear and readily understood.
Obviously, because the volume covers the whole campaign and battle, the maps of
the Second Day cannot fully rival those of Imhof for that particular segment
of the fighting, but they do a good job nonetheless. As such, "The Maps of
Gettysburg" makes a worthy complement to such specialty books as Pfanz's
narratives of the Second Day as well as more general studies such as Coddington or
Sears. Some comparison to Jeffrey Hall's "The Stand of the US Army at
Gettysburg" might be warranted, but I would say that Gotttfried's maps in general
are more accessible. Sufficient detail is supplied in the text accompanying
the maps to make the book something of a campaign/battle history in itself. A
definite thumbs up.
