Have again received numerous notes regarding artillery and the general's who
were knocked out it's fire. It is fact that Hood, Jenkins and Pender were
all taken out by artillery fire whither direct or indirect. Direct or indirect
does is not relevant. What matters most is the that Jenkin's people did not
participate satisfactorily July 2nd after their general was knocked senseless. It
is also fact that Pender's command was taken over by Lane then Trimble then
again Lane which had to have an effect? Neither of these two subordinates were
quality generals other then one in particular had a wonderful post battle
recollection that created turmoil for years to come. And we all know what happened
to Hood. Nothing to suggest here as we will never know what did not happen.
Then we come to issues like Gen. Reynolds who on July 1st may have been
felled by indirect shrapnel. No one but no one knows what killed Reynolds other
than he toppled from his horse with a small entrance and exit wound. If in fact
it was an artillery round it could have been one ball from spherical case or
perhaps a tiny jagged piece of shell casing from a timed exploding projectile
(shell). It is only theory a Confederate marksman shot him as it is he was hit
by a volley from a line of infantry. There were Confederate guns targeting that
area all capable of hitting Reynolds. It is also speculative and theory that
an artillery round killed him. The three Gray-Clad generals, however, were in
fact hit by artillery fire and their demise assuredly had an effect on the
outcome of that battle. With that said; I have no clue how!
