<< Having spent a long time scouring the files of the batteries engaged at
Gettysburg I can honestly state I have no clue as to which Federal battery's
service at that battle could be deemed the best and or most crucial. Far to many to
choose from .... >>
I can't imagine how anyone could ever make any such determination. As you say, too many instances of important contributions and sterling service to choose from.
Also, rarely was any battery fighting in such isolation that its efforts alone can be singled out as the determining factor in any particular part of the battle. There would normally be infantry nearby, both supporting and being supported, to the degree that separating out the contribution of one from the other in terms of the overall outcome can be almost impossible. Likewise, rarely was only a single battery involved in the action in any sector of the fighting.
To borrow from the phrase found in so many reports, "It would be invideous to single out any one for praise, when many performed so heroically."
