That argument might work for Sherman, who was very much a Grant protege,  but 
Grant was far too good of a commander to have remained a "minor player" in  
this war.  He would have proven himself time and again and would have been  
promoted accordingly - especially if he caught Lincoln's eye as he most  
certainly did.  He knew how to win and how not to ever quit.
 
 
 
 

On the  other hand, if left alone, John Pope may have had a grand career in 
the war,  instead of a major figure in the professional army.


I will give Pope New Madrid and related, but he did nothing else that  showed 
me anything that this would have happened.  Commanding an army was  more than 
winning fights - it was also very much logistics and Grant and Sherman  were, 
hands down, the finest logisticians of the entire war - with Rosecrans  
probably coming in after them.  Logistics wins battles.
