Hello,

There were eight Patton brothers and of these six Patton brothers that
fought for the Confederacy. As follows:

1) George S. Patton (VMI 1852) - raised the Kanawha Riflemen in 1859 - 22nd
Virginia Infantry (aka 1st Kanawha), became its third colonel, and raised to
brigade command. Led the 22nd VA at New Market, among other places, and KIA
at Third Winchester commanding a brigade. WW2 general George Patton
considered him to be his major military influence on going into the service himself.

My own Confederate ancestor served in his 22nd Virginia Infantry regiment.

2) James French Patton - Albemarle County militia pre-war - Lieutenant and
Adjutant, 22nd Virginia Infantry regiment. Became a judge on the West
Virginia Supreme Court.

3) Waller Tazewell Patton - (VMI 1855) - commanded the Culpepper Minutemen
and took them to Harper's Ferry for the John Brown raid - VA legislature,
1860 - later 7th Virginia Infantry - its second colonel (replacing James Kemper)
- KIA Gettysburg 7/3/1863.

4) John M. Patton - 21st Virginia Infantry - its second colonel - resigned
commission in August, 1862. Survived the war becoming an attorney.

5) Isaac W. Patton - colonel -22nd Louisiana Infantry (aka Patton's 21st) -
their third colonel - was at Vicksburg - survived the war and was involved
with some post-war racially oriented battle in New Orleans. Became the city's
mayor as well.

6) Hugh Patton - also served in the 7th Virginia Infantry before
transferring to another regiment - became clerk for the Virginia Senate after the war.

The two Patton brothers that did not serve:

1) Robert - the eldest at 37 (in 1861) - former US navy officer and,
according the Patton family historian Robert Patton, was "a serenely pickled
alcoholic," dubbed by his own family, "old and no account." Died in 1876 of
alcolholism.

2) George William - age 4 in 1861 - a tad too young I reckon - later
professor of engineering at VMI and VA Polytechnic

Their father, John, was a three -term Democrat congressman!

Hope this was of some interest.

Greg Biggs
