I had several great-uncles (the Chambers boys) that served at Gettysburg in the 7th WV of Carroll's brigade. Over the years, I have studied this regiment, as I have a lot of items from my ancestors that were handed down to me. In years of reading and study, I have never seen anything that strongly suggests they had any concern about an attack to their left, although they did write a fair amount about their ascent and descent of Cemetery Hill in the darkness, where they assisted my wife's great-great-grandpa's regiment, the 25th OVI.
That being said, the next time I am back home in SE Ohio and northern WV and see what might exist in the way of clues or hints either way.
One of the Chambers boys did not return from the Gettysburg campaign. His younger sister married Melvin Mingus, and they were my great-grandparents. There's a lot of verbal (and some written) history in our family that has been handed down about the 7th's role in the Gettysburg fight, but none purtains to the segment immediately before they rushed up the hill.
I'm working on an article for Gettysburg Magazine concerning the 7 WV at Gettysburg that will incorporate much of what I have found to date. if I locate anything to support or deny the proposed Wright hypothesis, I will let you know.
