<< The 14th Connecticut was in support of Woodruff's Battery until moved to
the
left to support Arnold's Battery, at the position where its monument now
stands. Major Ellis in his OR indicates that this occurred sometime between
noon and night, but is not explicit when. Curiously, Ellis told Bachelder it
was *"the next day we were moved a little further to the left... being to
the right of and supporting Arnold's Rhode Island Battery."* Chaplain
Stevens of the 14th Connecticut indicated that when the Confederate attack
of July 2 was made *"the regiment was still lying in support of Woodruff's
battery." * >>
Ellis appears to be somewhat confused in his letter to Bachelder, since in
it he also describes the regiment being in position on the 1st, whereas it
didn't even arrive on the field until the next morning. His OR report
appears the more reliable. A clue to the time may be found in the report of
Lt. Dent, of the 1st DE. He wrote,
"About 4 p.m., the ammunition of the men being exhausted, Lieutenant-Colonel
Harris withdrew the right wing of the regiment from the skirmish line, for
which he was placed under arrest by General Hancock. The command then
devolved on Capt. Thomas B. Hizar, of Company I. We were then assigned
position in the line of battle, behind a fallen stone wall to the left of
Woodruff's and the right of Arnold's batteries."
The most likely time for this would have been after Willard's brigade was
sent to the left, and Smyth's regiments were needed to fill the resulting
gap in the line.
