I'm seeking here to start with an acceptance of evidence apart from any
interpretation of it. Are we agreed that the Confederate accounts are
consistent that Wright's Brigade crossed the stone wall, breached the Union
line, and captured the Federal guns on the crest of the ridge?
>> And are there ANY Union artillery accounts that flatly state they were
overrun?
How many accounts do we have from Arnold's Battery? There is no OR.
Reichert's diary account is understandably brief, yet speaks of distress.
What else is there?
How many accounts do we have from Cushing's Battery? Again, there is no
OR. Only Fuger's story. Ranger Bert Barnett advised me to be dubious of his
account since he spent decades lobbying for a Medal of Honor (finally
getting it in 1897) and wasn't about to admit to something that might dampen
his chances.
If there are other participant accounts from these artillerists, I would be
interested in knowing about them.
One artillerist, a guy named Hunt, acknowledged that Wright "*broke through
our line and seized the guns in his front,"* subsequently being driven *"out."
*
**
Howard described Wright capturing a battery at the *"position"* of Webb's
Brigade. (Some assume that he there referenced only the two guns of Brown's
Battery in front of Webb's position, in front of the line.)
Of particular relevance is the statement of 1st Sergeant George Scott
(Stannard's Brigade), who told of seeing two Union batteries being
*"lost."* And
note where his unit was at the time, staged on the back slope of Cemetery
Hill (in sight of Arnold and Cushing, but not of other guns farther to the
left).
