Fred L. Ray's "Shock Troops of he Confederacy: The Sharpshooter Battalions of
the Army of Northern Virginia" is well worth reading on the subject; despite
the subtitle, it is by no means confined exclusively to looking at the ANV,
nor even just at Confederate units. The Sharpshooter Battalions in question
largely postdate Gettysburg.
