I was in New York City this weekend and visited U.S. Grant's Memorial on
this cold President's day. Thought the group might be interested in some
photos at the link below. So next time you are in a bar bet and someone
asks "Who is buried in Grant's Tomb" - you can say - No one since it is a
mausoleum.
The model statue of Grant on horseback was supposed to be a full scale
statue out front plus additional statues were supposed to be above the
entrance (see empty flat blocks atop the entrance) but they ran out of
money. The memorial was funded by $600K of private donations.
The individual busts of Sherman, Ord, etc. ring the lower chamber of the
tomb.

We also visited the New York Historical Society which is showing a special
exhibit entitled:
NEW YORK DIVIDED: SLAVERY AND THE CIVIL WAR
http://www.nydivided.org/

This was the second of two exhibits dealing with Slavery in New York. The
first was last year. If you live in the NYC area I would recommend visiting
the NYHS and this exhibit. Let's say that I learned a lot about NY history
that they did not teach me in NYC public school history class.

Bob,

It has been a while since I have visited Grant's Tomb, but they have done a
wonderful job in cleaning up the grounds of the site. I used to avoid going
there, as it became a den for drug addicts etc. It's a shame more NYers don't
visit the site, as the last time I was there, I had the place all to myself.

The exhibits at the NYHS are great, and have attended a few lectures there
in the recent month. They have a few more scheduled on Lincoln in the coming
months as well.

Regards from the Garden State,
