My real special focus in American military history is the Battle of the 
Little Big Horn (especially that part which led to the destruction of those troops 
under Geroge Custer's direct command), and one of the chief, everlasting 
ascinations is trying to tease out the threads of truth from the great pile of 
first-hand accounts that date anywhere from a few days after the battle to several 
decades later.  Not only do you have the usual problems of chaos and  stress 
and then lapses of memory and exercise of imagination to deal with, but also 
cultural and language barriers with many of the witnesses.  Ic comparison, 
study of Gettysburg seems almost coherent.  Almost.
