My real special focus in American military history is the Battle of the
Little Big Horn (especially that part which led to the destruction of those troops
under Geroge Custer's direct command), and one of the chief, everlasting
ascinations is trying to tease out the threads of truth from the great pile of
first-hand accounts that date anywhere from a few days after the battle to several
decades later. Not only do you have the usual problems of chaos and stress
and then lapses of memory and exercise of imagination to deal with, but also
cultural and language barriers with many of the witnesses. Ic comparison,
study of Gettysburg seems almost coherent. Almost.
