Dear Bob,
Thankyou for the info on pensions and for the quote as well about Sumter. I may use part of that as the name for my chapter.
I will be sure to acknowlege your help.

The basic disability law was published for the information of the Army as
General Order 91, 29 July 1862, and is printed in 123 OR 270.

Take care,

Bob

The war existed long before the cannonade of Sumter, and could not be
postponed. It might have begun otherwise or elsewhere, but war was in the
minds and bones of the combatants, it was written on the iron leaf, and you
might as easily dodge gravitation. Ralph Waldo
Emerson, "The President's Proclamation," The Atlantic, November 1862

The first pension Act passed 3 Aug 1861 authorizing retirement after 40
years service (12 Stat 289). That remained the only "retirement" pension
until the 1890s.

However, under an act of 14 June 1862 (12 Stat 567), as amended, officers
and enlisted men, and their widows and dependents, were eligible for a
disability pension. The rules were long and complex, different amounts being
allowed for loss of a finger, or a foot, on up to total disability.

For lieutenant colonels and above in the army, totally disabled, the amount
was $30 per month.

You can read al the details in Commissioner of Pensions, _Regulations
Relating to Army and Navy Pensions with Statutes.. _ Washington, 1879.

Take care,

Bob

Can someone please tell me the amount of, or tell me where I can look to
find out, the pension amount for a brevet major general or a regular colonel
in 1873?
