How would you explain the infantry action in which quite a few of Oates Alabamians were captured?

Hello:
There is no doubt that the 20th Maine charged. However,
precisely how it happened is open to more consideration. However, the
best thing I have read on this is Tom Desjardin's 'Stand Firm ye boys
of Maine' where he examines all of the evidence and comes up with a
very convincing description of how the charge all unfolded. But there
is absolutely no doubt that the charge happened.
