Hi Hugh,

Yes - there were a number of tactical manuals for all branches, which were
widely read by the students, instructors, and of course serving military
personnel.  Mahan wrote one of the most famous, of course.  Much of the
tactical training took place outdoors on the plain.  And there was quite a
horsemanship course, which Buford excelled at.
