Mark--

Understood completely. And I want to say because I only access the
board from work, I can't respond to as much as I would like. Perhaps
when I get better Internet connection at home I can peruse this more
leisurely and respond more often.

Tom --

My first caveat is that my response is a really uninformed one - I don't
know the answer - because it has been about six years since I looked at
any of this, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was not a June 1863
return for ANV (when would it have been done? Around June 1 or June
30?) If the latter, then the army would have been right in a big battle
when they needed to take it. If done earlier, the army would have been
spread out all over Pennsylvania.

For some work on the Pennsylvania campaign, I have tried looking at
order books in the National Archives, and if memory serves me correctly,
the ones I looked just stop early in June 1863. Apparently recording of
orders into books and the like was difficult to do while the army was in
motion to enemy-held territory or was not a priority. I suspect it was
deferred to a later time. Then a major battle and a tricky withdrawal
and they never seemed to go back and do it. A similar situation may
have existed for the returns.

You find this to be the case for a lot of ANV sources - the returns (if
one truly did not exist for June), the order books, and, on the
individual level, a lot of soldier diaries and letters ended on July 2
or 3 when they were killed or captured. It's like everything stopped.
It's a highly impressionistic set of evidence, but the sense you get is
that the battle and its aftermath were very disruptive to the army. As
a historian, its very disruptive because you may have to rely on one
source before the battle and another after it.

I caught that episode, as an artist I was very impressed with the level
of detail they rendered all the monuments. pretty cool that they
included a good rendering of the longstreet and other monuments. I love
that Show.

BTW sorry I haven been to active on here lately, been extreemly busy
with work and a new girlfiriend who is looking really promising to
become my fiance. I do read the posts whenever I have the chance just
tdont have as much time to read and respond to all of them these days.

Is there a June 1863 return for the ANV in the OR? There is one for May
in
25/2 and the July return is in 27/3, but cannot find June. Did I miss
it?
