Milroy ended up in Middle Tennessee in 1864 commanding rear area troops  
detailed with anti-guerilla operations and holding supply lines.  His  notoriety 
in the state came from his running of Union hit-squads who took out  after CS 
sympathizers on the civilian side whacking them in the finest Sopranos  style - 
and worse.  A recent book on this topic, "With Blood And  Fire,"  using Union 
Provost Marshall records as its basis, covers  this.
