He might not have had the choice if the public had gone against him in  
November.  Say Atlanta holds out; Cedar Creek is a Union loss, Mobile  holds, etc.  
Couple that with Grant still stuck where he was and it does  not look good 
after so much war.  And if Lincoln loses, it would not have  been him to make 
such a deal.  McClellan has so little backbone that he  just might, despite the 
plank in the Dem platform.
 
But we will never know.
