GDG- Belle Plain

Bob,

Thanks for this item. Very informative. Since the article does not
mention that a town exists there today, I gather Belle Plain was the name
for an area rather than a community. In April/May 1863 it was the location
from which Gregg's cavalry started out as part of Stoneman's raid in
conjunction with Hooker's attack at Chancelllorsville (OR, vol. 25, pt. 2,
p. 524).

I do not find Belle Plain, Va. on current maps. It served as a Union
cavalry base during the CW. In the OR Atlas, Plate VIII it is located about
8 or 9 miles ENE of Fredericksburg on Potomac Creek. Does anyone know
whether it still exists, perhaps under a different name? There does not
appear to be a town in that location on Virginia road maps.
