Jim,
I don't think you have any problem, there. A lot of tourists self-tour and that's not a problem, even if it's a family group and one member of the family is particularly knowledgeable. The whole licensing issue comes when it is being done on a more commercial basis. IIRR, special use permits are for more formal events.
