Let's not forget the one thing that Grant had over the commanders of the
AOP. Bill Sherman!

Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:
I think the fairer test of McClellan vs. Grant in command is at Antietam.
It's about noon or so and Lee's center has broken at the Sunken Road. There
are 10,000 fresh Union troops available to exploit the breach. McClellan
listens to Fitz John Porter who says that the troops represent the last
reserve of the last army of the republic, or something to that effect.
Grant would have told Porter to go to hell and attacked with everybody he
had on hand.
The War may have ended at dusk on September 17, 1862 at Antietam had Grant
been in command instead of McClellan. It would have largely been over
before the arrival of A.P. Hill. Hill would have arrived too late to affect
the outcome.
Grant suffers from constantly being underestimated. I do agree that he
would not have faired better then others at First Bull Run. Green troops
are green troops. But afterward?
And his western army was just as good as the AOP.
One only has to review Grant's on the field generalship at Ft. Donnelson
to realize he was combative by nature and unafraid of the enemy.
