It's very distressing that two organizations with the same objectives cannot come to agreement on these issues.

The Guides seem to have forgotten that they have a privileged position: they
are a creature of the United States government. They have a monopoly and if
I want to set up shop and offer tours -- free or for hire -- I cannot do it
and could be arrested -- on the complaint of the guides.

If they want their monopoly, with it comes supervision and rules on what
*they* can do or not do.

Take care,

Bob

Happy Holidays to all members of the Gettysburg
Discussion Group.

I hope Santa brings each of you the Civil War
book on your Christmas list (if you have not
already bought it for yourself, as I did!).

Enjoy the holiday with family and friends. Take
a minute to reflect on the holidays for our
troops - both past and present.

Look forward to seeing some of you on Friday in
Gettysburg.

Cheers,

With everything, comes change. It's not all bad. If we didn't have computers and still wrote with quill pens, I never would have met all you nice people out there. Hopefully, they'll be a meeting of the minds before long.

Interesting. I noticed that the article had a paucity of rationale in support of the new rules, other than ""We're trying to bring this up to industry standards," said Katie Lawhon, a park spokeswoman. "Industry standards are advanced payments and advanced reservations." What was the original impetus for these rule changes? Just curious.

It does appear that someone should give the ALBG a copy of the portion of the Code of Federal Regulations that covers licensed (that word is critical) battlefield guides.

Wonderful sentiments. I already have a superb ACW themed gift that I just received. A friend of mine cleared a VERY old & dead oak tree off her property outside of Springfield MO, right next to the Wilson's Creek battlfield. This tree had a very big and very old knot in it. When she and her husbanc were cutting the tree up, they found a canister shot ball (little bit bigger than a golf ball) lodged in the knot. She promptly boxed it up and sent it to me. Was the best gift I have gotten in years! :)

At any rate, I look forward to seeing you and the others this coming Friday. I'll be coming from Kansas City, leaving the night of 26 Dec, and hope to get in late the night of 27 Dec.
