John,

In Elizabeth D. Leonard¹s book, ³All the Daring of the Soldier Women of
the Civil War Armies,² she mentions an 1915 New York Times article that
states: ³Mary Siezgle the wife of a soldier in the 44th New York Infantry
who had first entered the military ranks as a nurse but had soon exchanged
her skirts for the uniform of a soldier in order to fight the enemy
directly. According to the article, Siezgle¹s battlefield experience
included Gettysburg.²

Also, ³On July 17, 1863, however, when Brigadier General William Hays
reported on the burial of the dead at Gettysburg, he noted that among those
he counted was a ³female (private) in rebel uniform.²
