The flag would simply have gotten into private hands through the soldiers who tore it up would be my guess.  They tore it up and then kept it, passing it down through their family would be my guess, but I am more curious as to how the 20th Maine "turned the tide" at Gettysburg and "prevented the rebel troops from overruning the entire Union force", according to the article.
