>I don't have my copy of Journey in Time with me
but I wonder what Frassanito's thoughts are on the subject.
Ok, I've my got my copy of JIT (the first book I ever purchased about (and
in) Gettysburg.)
To paraphrase Frassanito: He believes (at least at the time he wrote this)
that all the Gardner & company photos were recorded on or near the Rose
farm, and at Devil's Den (JIT, pg 222.) Gardner linked the photo to "the
field where General Reynolds fell" which Frassanito attributes to Gardner
attempting to capitalize on the fame of some Brady photographs published in
Harper's Weekly. One of these was captioned "Wheatfield in which General
Reynolds was shot."
JIT, page 226, Frassanito states: "...specific point was situated somewhere
in the open fields on the southern extreme of the field, near the Rose Farm
and close to the Emmitsburg Road."
In "Then and Now Companion" pg 30, there is a photo taken of the Rose farm,
and off in the left distance there is a prominent (tree?) that reminds me of
the object in the left distance of the Harvest of Death photo. Not that
prominent trees in the distance are hard to find in GB photos... It just
struck me because of the location. This photo was taken ca. 1880's
(Frassanito).
Tipton #2753 is also intriguing me as a possible background to the Harvest
of Death photo, but I don't know enough about the surrounding area to really
get excited about that location.
I would think the best chance to solve this mystery is in early photographs
taken after the battle, but I really doubt that's an original thought....
