In Early Photography at GB Frassanito deals with the HOD viewsin Section 104 (pp.315-318. He identifies its importance by characterizing the view as the only photograph of Union war dead on the field. He seems to believe that of several possible locations it was most likely to have been taken in the vicinity of the III Corps line on day two both East and West of the Emmitsburg Pike. While Fras. suspects the location he indicated that a major obstacle to precisely locating the field was the hazy nature of the background of the original plates. In his view 104a he identifies what might be a diamond shaped III Corps' badge. His major concern in matching then and now views is a suspected alteration in the terrain features. He seems to believe that the background terrain pictured no longer exists. So much for the film's hype.

Thanks for the link. I had to watch it twice, to verify that it indeed
implied that we wouldn't know where Little Round Top was without the images
taken of it after the battle!
Wow!
