2008 CALENDAR OF EVENTS


April             The New Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and
Visitor Center Soft Opening - The park’s new museum and visitor center will
fully open to the public some time during the first two weeks of April
2008, with the exception of the Cyclorama painting experience. The new
139,000 square foot facility features a new park visitor center, a 24,000
square foot museum on Gettysburg in the Civil War, a new 22 minute film
about the Battle of Gettysburg entitled, “A New Birth of Freedom,” the
restored Gettysburg Cyclorama Painting, Refreshment Saloon, Museum
Bookstore, classrooms, and curatorial and administrative offices. The Grand
Opening, including the Cyclorama painting experience, is scheduled for
September 26-28, 2008. The project is funded by the non-profit Gettysburg
Foundation, in cooperation with Gettysburg National Military Park.

April 12-13       12 th Gettysburg National Military Park Seminar "The Fate
of a Nation,” The Third Day at Gettysburg Fee. To register, contact

April 27    “Friends of Gettysburg” Annual March for Gettysburg A
fund-raising walk for battlefield preservation sponsored by the Gettysburg
Foundation. To register, call the Gettysburg Foundation at (717) 338-1243.

May 26      Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies 141st Annual Memorial Day
observances. Parade at 2 p.m. followed by a ceremony in the Soldiers’
National Cemetery.

June 7            Annual “Friends of Gettysburg” Volunteer Work Day
Sponsored by the Gettysburg Foundation. For information and to register
call the Foundation at (717) 338-1243.

June 14     Interpretive Summer Season Begins Includes a full range of FREE
Ranger-conducted programs, walks, tours, campfire programs, living history
programs, children's programs and battle walks offered daily through August
9.

June 21     Concert - The Wildcat Regimental Band will present a concert on
the history of the American Brass Band Movement, along with a grand concert
in the afternoon. Held in conjunction with The Gettysburg Festival. Free.
At the Museum and Visitor Center.

June 29 – July 6  Gettysburg Heritage Days – the 26th annual event
throughout the Gettysburg community, honoring the memory of the Battle of
Gettysburg. Including the Sacred Trust lecture series on July 4, 5 & 6.
Locations throughout Gettysburg

July 1-3          145th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg – A series
of special National Park Service Ranger-conducted
battle walks and other programs. Free.

July 6-11         The Eisenhower Academy , A one-week institute for school
teachers covering Eisenhower's foreign and domestic policy, 1950s popular
culture and Eisenhower’s leadership. Graduate credit or Pennsylvania
Professional Education Credit available. Fee. (717) 338-9114.

August 23         14th Annual Civil War Music Muster Civil War brass bands,
fife and drum and parlor music are presented in concert at the Museum and
Visitor Center, followed by a concert at the Pennsylvania Monument in the
early evening. Free.

September 20-21   World War II Weekend A living history encampment at the
Eisenhower National Historic Site. Featuring Allied soldiers, a German
camp, and World War II vintage jeeps and trucks. Saturday, 9-5; Sunday,
9-4. Included in site admission. Both shuttle service and, weather
permitting, on-site parking available this weekend only.  (717) 338-9114.

November 18-19   Grand Opening of the David Wills House This world-class
museum about Abraham Lincoln and the Gettysburg
Address is a new venue of Gettysburg National Military Park. President
Abraham Lincoln spent the night at the David Wills House before delivering
the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. This facility will contain
museum exhibits related to the aftermath of battle in the town of
Gettysburg and Lincoln’s stay. Operated by the non-profit Main Street
Gettysburg, in partnership with Gettysburg National Military Park.

November 19       145th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address An annual
observation with brief memorial services in the Soldiers’ National Cemetery
starts with a wreath laying at 9:45 a.m. Sponsored by the Lincoln
Fellowship of Pennsylvania, the Civil War Institute of Gettysburg College,
and Gettysburg National Military Park.

November 22       Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremonies An annual event
held in conjunction with the Gettysburg Address anniversary. A parade of
Civil War living history groups begins at 1:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Sons
of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

and...            6th Annual Remembrance Illumination, Soldiers’ National
Cemetery. Sponsored by the Gettysburg Foundation. Luminary candles will be
placed on each Civil War grave as a testament to the sacrifices made here
in 1863. For information contact the Foundation at (717) 338-1243.

December 1-31     An Eisenhower Christmas The Eisenhower home is decorated
in the traditions of the Eisenhowers. Some original decorations and
Christmas cards will be on display. Included in site admission. (717)
