  Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:

Lisa.A group of Gettysburg residents saw a need for a secondary,
non-sectarian school. In 1810 they obtained a charter and a grant for $2000.
from the state to establish a "public school"; i.e. not controlled by a
religious body and opened to all, for a tuition charge. The school would be
under the control of "trustees". In 1813, the trustees built the Adams
County Academy at the southeast corner of West High and South Washington
Sts. In 1826, two of the building's four large rooms housed the Seminary.
June 25, 1827 the Gettysburg Academy began educational operations in the
  other half of the building.
